- PIE (Position Independent Executables) are now enabled across all architectures by default. PIE, of course, being a security benefit. Fedora had been using PIE by default since Fedora 23 while it's great to see Ubuntu 17.10 will use PIE everywhere.

- Improved Secure Boot is being worked on, including better chainloading for booting Windows from GRUB. There are also some Secure Boot fixes pending.

- Python 3.6 has been added to artful-proposed with the transition in progress to this latest version of Py3.

We are excited to announce the release of Juju 2.2.0 and conjure-up 2.2.0! This release greatly enhances memory and CPU utilisation at scale, improves the modelling of networks, and adds support for KVM containers on arm64. Additionally, there is now outline support for Oracle Compute, and vSphere clouds are now easier to deploy. conjure-up now supports Juju as a Service (JAAS), macOS clients, Oracle and vSphere clouds, and repeatable spell deployments.

GNOME

Further theme fixes have been made in Artful to get GNOME Shell and Ambiance looking just right.
Network Manager is updated to 1.8. It is currently awaiting the resolution of some test issues before it migrates to the release, but that should take place in the coming days.
GNOME Terminal received a small fix to make it easier to create custom terminals.

LivePatch

Work is continuing on the Live Patch client UI. We can now install, enable and disable the Live Patch Snap from the Software Properties window. Next up will be showing notifications when the Live Patch service is protecting your computer.

Snaps

GNOME Software now works with the Snap Store to show promoted Snaps, or “Editors Picks”. This is released into Artful and other supported releases will follow.
We debugged and fixed some desktop Snap theming issues. There were some file sharing changes needed in snapd in the “Unity7” interface (which will need renaming) and these are now merged. More fixes to the desktop launcher scripts were done to provide further default theming, and these were added to the GNOME Platform Snap as well.
James Henstridge has been working on getting Snaps to work with Portals, and he’s making great progress. You can read more about it, and how to test it, here:

QA

We’re reviewing and updating the desktop test plan. Once this is finalised (due next week) we’ll be announcing a call-for-testing programme with small, quick tests you can perform regularly and feedback your findings. This will help us to ensure the overall quality of the desktop images is kept high throughout the development cycle. More on this soon.

We’re also running our automated tests on real hardware with Intel, Nvidia and AMD graphics cards to cover the main bases.

Video Acceleration

We’re working through all the various links in the chain to get to a situation where we can playback video using hardware acceleration by default. At the moment our focus is getting it to work on Intel graphics hardware, but there are a few issues around using Intel’s SDK with open-source LibVA, but these are being worked on upstream:

Last year in August, Canonical's Martin Pitt, the systemd maintainer for the Ubuntu Linux operating system at that time, announced the company's plans to unify and clean up the networking configuration in Ubuntu Linux.

They introduced netplan, a project that promised to centralize the network configuration for all Ubuntu Linux operating system versions, including Desktop, Server, Cloud, and Core (Snappy) under a single file (e.g. /etc/netplan/*.yaml) instead of using /etc/network/interfaces files.

The implementation of netplan in Ubuntu would mean the replacement of ifupdown and the ability of the installers to generate only those YAML-based network configuration files, giving Ubuntu developers the flexibility of dynamically switching between multiple backends like NetworkManager and systemd-networkd.

GNOME

We’ve migrated ubuntu-session to a new unity-session package. This means that the default session is GNOME Shell and people can install Unity 7 and it’s related packages via unity-session. The migration is working well so far, but we still have some more work to do in order to make sure everything “just works”.

LivePatch

We’re now working on the update-manager UI to add the list of kernel CVEs which are handled by the LivePatch service and a brief description of each.

Snaps

We’ve done more work on getting desktop themes working better with Snaps. We’re documenting the problems we’ve encountered and are creating some sample Snaps help with making the improvements we need.

QA

We completed our review of the desktop test plan this week and have set our priorities for this cycle. This will cover installation, upgrades, some core application smoke tests, suspend/resume, Network Manager and translations. We will be publishing a blog on how you can get involved next week.

Updates

A new version of PulseAudio is in Xenial proposed (version 1:8.0-0ubuntu3.3). This brings fixes for Bluetooth A2DP audio devices. We’d appreciate testing and feedback.

Video Acceleration

We’ve got hardware accelerated video decoding working in a Proof-Of-Concept using a GStreamer and VA-API pipeline. The result is 3% CPU usage to play an h264 4K 60FPS video on Haswell. 4K h265 HEVC is also playable but requires a Skylake or later processor.
