We published earlier an update to an article published last week about the fact that there was a nasty bug present in the GNOME Software application that made it impossible for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) users to install third-party .deb packages.
On May 4, 2016, Canonical finally pushed the patched version of the GNOME Software app, which is called Ubuntu Software in the newly released Ubuntu 16.04 LTS operating system, allowing users to install various applications distributed in the .deb file format and obtained from third-party sources with a simple double mouse click on the file.
But that's not all Canonical introduced in today's update of Ubuntu Software, as Mohan Ram informs us that it is also possible to install snaps now, as in the new Snap package format invented by Canonical specifically for the Snappy Ubuntu Core operating system aimed at deployments on embedded and IoT (Internet of Things) devices.
However, at this moment it is only possible to install apps in the snap file format that have been submitted to the Ubuntu Snappy Store. To install a snap, all you have to do is to open Ubuntu Software, search for the respective snap (e.g. notes snap) and install it. Please note that to install and remove snaps, you'll need an Ubuntu One account.

As the headline says, the future of the Ubuntu Desktop is Snaps (Snappy) and Unity 8 with Mir, at least according to Canonical's Will Cooke, Ubuntu Desktop Manager. Work has already begun on pushing these new and modern technologies to the Ubuntu Desktop, as Ubuntu 16.04 LTS has just received support for installing Snaps from the Ubuntu Snappy Store.
Snappy is slowly conquering the Ubuntu Desktop, and it looks like, starting with Ubuntu 16.10, we will be able to purchase Snap apps from the Ubuntu Snappy Store through the Ubuntu Software, and various major applications like LibreOffice and Mozilla Firefox will be installed by default as Snaps in the Live ISO images. Canonical is also working on a method of upgrading various packages from the .deb file format to snap.
For example, if you now have Ubuntu 16.04 LTS installed, with LibreOffice in .deb format, and then you want to upgrade to Ubuntu 16.10 or Ubuntu 17.04 where LibreOffice is available in the snap format, the transition needs to be as smooth as possible so that you won't lose any settings. Lastly, key applications like Chromium, LibreOffice, or Firefox will be available only as snaps.
Unity 7 enters its twilight years, Unity 8 gets all the attention now
Canonical's Will Cooke has mentioned that the Unity 7 desktop enters its twilight years, which means that it gets fewer features and it's being reduced to only critical and OEM work. This is because Unity 8 desktop is getting all the attention now, and it will become the default desktop session somewhere after Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak). Looking at the slide attached below, the transition from Unity 7 to Unity 8 is happening sometime between Ubuntu 16.10 and Ubuntu 17.04.
Right now, Unity 8 is available on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) repos as a technology preview for early adopters and those who want to take it for a test drive, but it needs a lot of work. On Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak), things will look more and more polished, and Unity 8 will be installed by default as an alternative session to Unity 7 so that you don't have to manually install any related packages. GTK and Chromium Mir backends are also being worked on.
Among other interesting features coming to the Ubuntu Desktop later this year is the possibility of installing updates offline through the Ubuntu Software package manager, during reboots. Sync with GTK and GNOME Stack will continue for Ubuntu 16.10 just to make sure that flavors like Ubuntu GNOME work well. On the other hand, it looks like the Qt4 might be purged from the ISO images to make room for useful stuff.

On May 16, 2016, Orbital-Apps.com was proud to announce the immediate availability of their portable applications, in the ORB format, for the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system.
Being the first time we introduce our readers to portable apps for Ubuntu, we would like to let them know how these apps actually work. First of all, the available apps (see the full list below) are freely distributed via the Orbital-Apps.com website in the .orb compressed file format to save space on the USB thumb drive.
The apps will automatically enter the "Portable/Persistent Mode" when they are run from the USB stick, which means that all settings will be stored on the thumb drive. Of course, this means that no installation is required, but you'll first need to download the ORB Launcher app from the project's website.
Additionally, you should know that no root (system administrator) access is required to run any of the available portable apps, which come with built-in integrity checking that lets you know if they have been damaged because of an unreliable Internet connection. As for Internet connection, all apps work offline too.
Supported applications
Among the applications that are now available to download as a portable app, we can mention popular names like LibreOffice, Blender, Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla Thunderbird, FileZilla, Kodi, VLC Media Player, AbiWord, ISO Master, Stellarium, qBittorrent, Audacity, GIMP, Audacious, and Inkscape.
Additionally, software projects like OpenShot, PiTiVi, Kino, EasyTAG, GNOME MPlayer, Darktable, MyPaint, Tomahawk, uGet, Clementine, Deluge, GHex, Geary, Workrave, Vinagre, Sound Juicer, Brasero, Bless, SpeedCrunch, PDFMod, HexChat, GtkHash, GNOME To Do, and Glade are also available.
Please note that the apps mentioned above have been designed to work only with the 64-bit version of the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system. It is possible for them also to be compatible with similar platforms, such as 64-bit Debian GNU/Linux or 64-bit Linux Mint 17.3 "Rosa," but it's not guaranteed.

May 18, 2016, London. Today Screenly, the most popular digital signage solution for the Raspberry Pi, and Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, the world’s most popular open-source platform, jointly announce a partnership to build Screenly on Ubuntu Core. Screenly is adopting Ubuntu Core to give its customers a stable platform that is secure, robust, simple to use and manage, all available on a $35 Raspberry Pi.
Screenly commercialises an easy to install digital signage box or “player” and a cloud-based interface that today powers thousands of screens around the world. This enables restaurants, universities, shops, offices and anyone with a modern TV or monitor to create a secure, reliable digital sign or dashboard. This cost effective solution is capable of displaying full HD quality moving imagery, web content and static images.
Ubuntu Core offers a production environment for IoT devices. In particular, this new “snappy” rendition of Ubuntu offers the ability to update and manage the OS and any applications independently. This means that Screenly players will be kept up to date with the latest version of the Screenly software, and also benefit from continuous OS updates for enhanced security, stability and performance. Transactional updates means that any update can automatically be rolled back, ensuring reliable performance even in a failed update scenario.
Furthermore, Ubuntu Core devices can be managed from a central location, allowing Screenly users to manage a globally distributed fleet of digital signs easily, and without expensive on-site visits. A compromised display can be corrected immediately and the security of devices that are in public sphere is drastically improved.
Viktor Petersson, CEO of Screenly explains, “Ubuntu Core enables us to be more flexible and to focus on our software rather than managing an OS and software distribution across our large fleet of devices.”
